OSU DESIS Lab, based in the Ohio State University, hosted the DESIS Café on September 15th, 2021. The event was co-hosted by Susan Melsop and Sébastien Proulx.

After having the opportunity to share and contextualize our work, the café conversation evolved into some critical questions regarding decolonizing design, the relations of the local to social innovation, and if design pedagogy can be a vehicle for social justice…

While these areas of inquiry and critical reflection remain potent to our ongoing community engaged design projects and praxis, what is most important is the ongoing dialogue we hope to spawn with each of you in (and beyond) the DESIS network to do engaged work collaboratively, creatively and judiciously.  Borrowing from Arturo Escobar we, too, envision a “design theory and practice aimed at channeling design’s world-making capacity toward ways of being and doing that are deeply attuned to justice and the Earth”.  (Emphasis mine.)

We welcome your perspectives and invite you to continue the conversation with us! It goes without saying, we would be honored to do research with you and/or collaborate on a project!
