Background and objectives
DESIS Lab at Yonsei is a design research lab located in Yonsei University in South Korea. Led by Dr. Joon Sang Baek. It aims to tackle complex social problems through design research and practice.
Primary research areas and activities
Current research interests: mobility, ageing, behavior change, co-design, community-centered design, design for services
Our current research direction is twofold: 1) systems design approaches to complex social problems and 2) sustainable PSS for businesses. Positing that a human organisation is a sociotechnical system, we have focused on how service design as a technical intervention can facilitate the transformation of the social system towards sustainability, i.e., to enhance the characteristics of the social system associated with sustainability. We have been particularly interested in the characteristics of resilience and collaboration in local communities, and proposed a sociotechnical framework to design for services that promote them. Recently, we have investigated natural ecosystems as a reference to sustainable systems design. As the first step, we are exploring the potential of self-organisation, a process of pattern formation in physical and biological systems through interactions internal to the system (e.g. the creation of structures by social insects), in nature as a reference for collaborative service design, and applying it to the design of services and platforms that promote 1) open innovation and 2) active and collaborative ageing.
